sam

i cannot get enough of this boy.
a true fashionista.

grandma gibbs gave jack this awesome dr. jacket so he could be like his dad. sam wanted to try it on and i fell in love all over again. he loves to take my temperature, check my reflexes (my belly-button reflex is doing well, by the way), and give me shots.

he is at that stage where his vocabulary multiplies exponentially every day. i am astounded at how much he picks up. i love hearing him reply in his little voice "kay, mommy", or "sah-ee" (sorry), or "HHHIIII, JACK!" so cute.

jack

oh jack. there are no words.

okay, maybe there are some...like what prevented you from continuing your masterpiece and painting the whole body? or maybe that i would have gone with a different shade of blue? but mostly i just said, i'm so glad your dad is home to deal with this.
this is what happened one day when he didn't feel like taking a nap but i shut him up in his room anyway.

look at him, he's seriously feeling cool in this one.
this is supposed to be a shot of sam but jack was really happy to stick himself in the foreground.

i'm not totally sure what these pics are. a sword and cheesestick wielding ninja, i guess.

this kid has more personality in one finger than i do in my whole body. he's stinkin' smart, funny, and a true baller. seriously. and he's almost 4. wha?!?...

praying is tricky

it really is. figuring it all out can be a challenge. but jack is really starting to get the hang of it. here's a couple examples:

he's really good at saying a memorized prayer, and most of the time, it's not really time appropriate, ie "bless daddy to drive home safely" and shawn is sitting across from him at the dinner table. but he says it because at some point in the last 6 months, he was prompted to. so his prayer has become a memorized conglomerate of said prompted moments. a couple of nights ago, when he volunteered to say family prayer, we encouraged him to think of 2 new things to pray to Heavenly Father about (thinking they would be tacked on to the list of memorized petitions).

dear Heavenly Father,
please bless jack that he won't be afraid,
please bless sam that he won't be afraid.
in the name of Jesus Christ, amen.

2 things, done.

after further encouragement to think about what he is praying for this spilled out at the dinner table last night:

dear Heavenly Father,
thank you for this day.
thank you for this food, please bless it to make us healthy and happy.
please bless nephi that he will build a ship.
and please bless mary and Jesus that they will make it to egypt.
in the name of Jesus Christ, amen.

brilliant. pray for things that have already happened so then you know prayer works.

absolutely scrumptious.

new year's resolution

notice how there is no "s" on the end of resolution. i feel as if i can only handle one resolution in my life right now, because if there are more, there is more chance for failure and therefore unnecessary guilt. mostly, if i were to be totally honest, i'm not very motivated by "new year's resolutions". do i sound a bit cynical? i apologize, don't know where that's coming from.

anywho, i am going to set one. we are going to read scriptures as a family every night and make it a HABIT. i feel like this is relatively in my reach because we already read with jack, we just need to include sam-boy and then tack on an amazing spiritually-charged prayer usually by said jack at the end of it. i'm also a creature of habit (like, bordering OCD), so i feel like this is realistic and achievable. maybe slide in the fact that we are commanded to do this, and it should be a done deal, right?

okay, maybe i have a small other goal...to get my business up and running. anyone having a wedding?...i'd love to sing at it. just saying.

happy christmas/new traditions

we had a fantastically busy christmas this year and i did a teensy-weensy bit better at taking pictures, still need to improve. we ran from house to house, family to family so it was a bit crazy, but i wouldn't have had it any other way. we did do christmas morning on our own, which was great fun. the boys slept till 8, so i showered and was totally ready for the day by the time they got up. loved it, hoping that won't ever change.

but before i dive into pictures, i want to document 2 new traditions that i'm hoping to carry on. the first is our christmas eve present. we always did jammies growing up and i know a lot of people do that, but i changed it to a book. every year, every person in our little family will get a new book on christmas eve. i love reading, my boys love to read and i want that to continue. a little selfish, you might ask? perhaps. the only person who may not stand to benefit, though, would be shawn who has only read the harry potters. i will valiantly try.

i also tried a new method of gift-buying for my boys, which i'm really excited about. my friend beth told me about an idea that i'm sure many of you have already heard of - giving each child 3 gifts. the gift of gold, frankincense, and myrrh...which translates into something they need, something they want, and something sentimental/educational. brilliant. i know i may be weird, but buying christmas for my boys has been a stressful endeavor until this year. i never have a lot of money i can spend, and i want to get the best toys for what money i have, blah, blah, blah. so this just narrows it perfectly for me. 3 gifts for each kid. done. i also feel it minimizes a little of the materialism that can creep in. then i had a small moment of "isitgoingtolooksparseunderthetree?cuzifitlookssparseunderthetree,i'macrappymom..."
but once we wrapped everything and got it all set up, it was perfect. not too much, not too little.
ps they also get a present and they're stocking filled by santa, so that helps.

santa brought the bike, the nerf gun was the gift he wanted. we scored this year, he actually plays with his presents.

after we did our own little deal, we went to my grandma's for my grandpa's famous french toast breakfast. love it. love him.
be still my beating heart. this is my very attractive hottie brother brad, and even better...he made his ugly christmas sweater. wha?!? he is so single, catch him while you can.
the boys looooove their uncles.
sweet dad, and sweet sisters.

his sweet hat from great-grandma dudley that is sadly too small and i shall be returning to gap.
this is sam and mary, she was bigger than him when she was standing.
cutie-patooties, mom and dad.
and this, friends, is another holiday tradition that i'm not totally sure if shawn enjoys or not. i love a good puzzle. it may be a bad thing, because i may or may not ignore my children for a couple of weeks while it sits on my counter, waiting to be completed.

then the pictures end. only made it through half the day and then totally checked out of picture taking mode. sad, because we had our first annual christmas concert on christmas night, at which my husband, father, and brothers wore kilts and sang and danced to their own rendition of "i saw 3 ships". it was killer.

good times.

naps are the best

especially with grandpa.

p.s. lest you be deceived, this lasted for about 30 seconds. my child has to be locked away in his own room for any sort of snoozing to take place

playing catch-up

just catching up.
sam wanted 2 different shoes on, which should totally be a new trend but only if your legs are as chubby as his. hot stuff. the diaper adds a lot as well.

another flexing shot.
